Metro State and Colorado Mountain College

Announce

Degree Completion Program in Surveying

Is available on the Western Slope

The Surveying and Mapping Degree Program at Metropolitan State College of Denver (MSCD) is pleased to announce that it will be partnering with Colorado Mountain College (CMC) to provide distance delivery of courses to western slope students wanting to pursue or advance a career in land surveying. These courses will make it possible for students to complete a BS degree in Surveying and Mapping through a combination of online and videotaped lecture courses. Video courses and online delivery allow students to work full time while continuing their education, often applying what they are learning to their jobs, and enhancing their value as employees.

Funding for the online courses is being provided by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education's Rural Education Access Program (REAP) which pairs community colleges and 4-year colleges/universities to increase educational opportunities in rural areas of the state. CMC was chosen to host MSCD's Surveying and Mapping Program, because its several campuses serve areas with significant growth and the corresponding need for surveying.

MSCD's Surveying and Mapping Degree Program, headed by Herbert W. Stoughton, PhD, is the only one of its kind in Colorado and in the region. It prepares graduates for registration as professional land surveyors and for careers in other areas of surveying and mapping. A relatively new area of employment for graduates is in land information systems (storing information on land parcels, public utilities, natural resources, etc., in computer systems for record keeping and planning purposes). Dr. Stoughton, who is nationally respected in the surveying profession, came to MSCD, through the recruiting efforts of the Professional Land Surveyors of Colorado (PLSC). Dr. Stoughton has over 35 years as a professional land surveyor, a professional engineer and a certified photogrammetrist.

Students interested in learning more about the requisite lower division course work offered by CMC may obtain advising materials through the nearest CMC campus or center. For practicing land surveyors, SUR 3150-2 Astronomy for Surveyors is now available on DVD. For more details, contact Susan Call in Extended Campus Programs at MSCD (303) 721-1313 or send an email inquiry to scall4@mscd.edu.
